Monoculture?

- I believe this video demonstrates quite a pessimistic view of Levy's theory on Collective Intelligence. But first, How I came across this you-tube video? I found this video in my attempt to find if there was or would be a live action "Transmetropolitan" movie or series. The “Transmetropolitan” is a popular graphic novel similar to Watchmen. This video is a fan made attempt to portray the main character; Spider Jerusalem’s ideology on the modern world. Now to the issue of Levy's Collective Intelligence, As Levy's believes Collective Intelligence is the good in humans, used to solve the world’s problems; I argue that in this video the human mind is in the right place but misguided. As we are taught to be good consumers of media, the media tells us brand names are quality. In our intention to buy a quality product, to benefit ourselves and society in a sense, we are actually diminishing diversity, giving power to already established brands such as McDonalds and MTV, mentioned in the video. As Levy says, "Power comes from impoverishing those quarters being around it". Again as Levy comments "we are the soil of existence", we have the choice as Spider Jerusalem so bluntly puts it, by not **** paying for it.” For these actions will lead us to a global village of minimum diversity, in short a monoculture. Our Collective intelligence is so ingrained in brand names that that is all we consume and appreciate anything else is foreign and no good. This is the single-minded, double edge sword of our media based economy.
