iGun Road Rage - Watch more Funny Videos
This video was obviously composed to be shared as the creator looks to express his opinion of being stuck in traffic. Through the internet and cyberspace, the creator is able to commentate on a matter he experiences everyday at a national level where people are willing to listen and actually can relate. He filmed this video alone in his car, as his frustrations escalated. The video's popularity matches the theory by Marshall McLuhan and the fact that the globe has "shrunk" and "promotes collective consciousness." It is now public for anybody find offensive because of the language and the metaphoric action, or find instantly relatable and hilarious. The video is sort of a "slice of life" situation that even offers commentary on this particular "slice of life." Technology has given the creator two opportunities in this video. The iPhone presents him the ability to vent out his frustrations through a simulated act. The video itself presents him with the ability of sharing his commentary of mundaneness traffic and driving. Technology has given him the opportunity to have a voice and speak to those similar to him.

I agree with Jonathan's statement that technology allows the individual to have a voice. This video is a perfect example of the short, snarky tone that is common in all viral videos. The fact that any person can pick up a phone and take video that can make them famous is a consequence of our modern interconnected network society. A "Global Village", as Marshall McLuhan would advocate. It is such a connected society that anyone can express their voice or in this case anxiety at a traffic jam. Benkler would view this as a revolution due to its active participants in a network environment.
ReplyDeleteMany viewers can relate to the frustration of the creator of this snarky video. New media has given this man an outlet to express his frustration. Through the media sites he can communicate to the online community and joke about something that angers everybody. The best part is that his Iphone allowed for him to show a gun without other drivers seeing a gun and freaking out, so without that Iphone application the video would not have been able to maintain its humorous nature.
ReplyDeleteBesides the fact that this video is hilarious, it captures the creators identity of someone who has road rage. In this age of new media, there is an application for about anything. This iphone application couldn't have been put to better use. As "Kevin" is trapped in traffic, he uses his imagination and components from new media for escapism. This simple video of trying to pass time has the same amount of potential to become viral as a premeditated and funded video would.
