This viral video was created by me and my friends. Once completed, we posted it onto the popular Youtube network. The central message of this video was to depict the internal struggle that teenagers with anorexia have to deal with, especially with today’s pressures to be an ideal weight influenced by society. Soon after we launched this video into cyberspace, it received thousands of views from others who were on the internet at different places and different times. With today’s technology, space has been re-interpreted. This video was sent into a place where there are no boundaries between networkers through a “Space of Flows” that information from the internet travels. The idea of “Timeless Time” makes it possible for our video to be viewed at any time, because the network of Youtube is never unavailable. Networkers, including myself, have all become members of a “Global Village”, which is the concept that we are all connected to each other through the information we contribute and receive to and from the Internet. Collective intelligence is shared by users who provide any type of information on the World Wide Web. They are the ones that have control over what other users of technology can absorb. We can effect collective intelligence by posting videos we make, or commenting and rating videos that we watch. Me and my friends have used this power to get our video into cyberspace, spreading our creation with the hope of being a small voice for anorexic people. Our video is now being shared in a “Gift Economy”, where sending videos to friends only with the intention of sharing information is a norm, as well as in a “Network Society”, where we have no price to pay to spread our message.

  1. This video represented a positive use of the Youtube social network because it depicted the internal struggle that teenagers have with anorexia. It reminds people that anorexia is a growing problem that should not be taken lightly. As future commercial advertisement mislead consumers by using programs like photo shop in order to ‘perfect’ the human body, I predict at some point in time companies may become required to reveal that their advertisement has been digitally enhanced. That is going to be very interesting because I cannot wait to see all small the font will be in the commercial makeup advertisements.
